Cairns was so hot and humid like I never experienced it before. A good experience, though. I arrived late in the evening but I could still check in at a over conditioned reception at YHA Central in Cairns. Before I entered my room I spotted a blond girl on skype talking in Swiss German, which made me a bit excited but I was too shy to talk to her as she was phoning. Later in my room we crossed eachother and all enthusiastic I spoke to her and we ended up sitting in my bed, talking for hours. We shared very personal and touching experiences. Her name is Jenny (23), from Baselland and she's travelled Scandinavia, America, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia for six months. Every night we met and talked, during the day she was busy scuba diving and I did two day tours from which I tell you later.
By the way when I first arrived I met the other Swiss woman which I got to know on Fraser a few weeks before and she told me that she met a girl from Bern called Daniela and she reckons that we could be sisters. She showed me a picture and indeed we look similar even though Daniela was kind of super fat! haha... damn.
I'd love to tell you how many people I met in Cairns but there were just toooo many people I talked to.
My first tour guided me to the Cape Tribulation, which was a good two hour drive with a tourguide who was non stop talking and I'd have loved to ask him if he could shut up but you know, you don't want to be rude... The tourguide was super hot, though. Even though he had onw finger missing! But he was always talking from his wife so ... Anyway first we went to see some animals in a sort of zoo. I saw a thousand huge birds, an awake koala, kangurus, a snake and a small crocodile. The crocodile was quite impressive, he was just about 40cm short and the instructor told us that they grow their entire life and grow to 4-5m long, oh my god?! Cute.
We ate lunch at a beatiful beach where there were a hundred massive spiders with nets as big as a table! So there was this thick spider hanging in its net with a grey big butt and our tourguide told us that they won't harm you so I went really close to take a picture. Instantly the spider turned its butt in my direction (by the way its ass was as big as your thumb and the whole body as big as your hand, the legs had yellow stripes by the way) and I thought 'ah great it makes movements for me'... I thought wrong, it spitted white stuff in my direction, kind of in my face. Fortunately it missed my face but still it scared the shit out of me that was so scary!!! And a good laughter. We did a rainforest walk which was just amazing, I learned so much about trees and more. I fell in love with a palmtree with colossal leaves, as big as our gardentable. We saw a few more creatures in the rainforest which was interesting, too. Totally tired the guy drove us home.
The next morning I bumped into the two German girls from Germany, Marie and Noemi, I got to know them in Rockhampton after my short trip to Great Keppel Island. First I just talked to Marie because Noemi was still asleep, but soon she joined our conversation, too. We decided to go in the center together a bit, which was really cool!
I just remembered the first day I was in Cairns I bought stuff to make henna tattoos and I covered my whole left arm and leg in tribal. I got so many compliments for it you can not imagine, just everyone said something. Some people were just staring but most of them were curious about where I did it and full with pride I told them that I did it by myself.
I haven't slept so nice for a while like I did in Cairns as we had air conditioning in our room which worked really well.
The second tour contained heaps of swims in lakes, creeks and waterfalls, they were a good change to the sticky salt water, as they all were fresh water. Those lakes were located on mountains 800m above sea level, so up there it was 8 degrees colder than in Cairns: that was heaven.
That night I went to eat dinner with Jenny at 'Grill'd', as it was so hot we sweat like pigs while eating. But the food was good. Cairns is awesome for eating out, so many different restaurants. Back in the hostel Jenny, Marie, Noemi and me aat outside, drank cider and talked. Noemi and Marie wanted to go to Gilligans (a famous hostel with it's own club, travel agency and so on) as there was a MTV party on and asked us to come along. Jenny couldn't as she had to catch an early flight the next morning. I first thought that I don't feel like joining but then I remembered that I've never regret going along with somebody. I grabed my purse, the two girls got dressed and we went there. We payed $15 for the entrance! But it was fine. Inside the music was very loud and everyone was dancing so we danced for about an hour and had really good fun!
My last day in Cairns I spent with them, too. We had a coffee in Gloria Jeans and Marie painted a beatiful mandala henna on my back. We said goodbye to eachother and they promised that they'd visit me in Switzerland, which made me happy. Now I'm sitting in the plane to Perth, the last big city in Australia before I leave for... Singapore!!!
